Descriptions of genres

African - Music that comes from Africa that stylistically incorporates lots of rhythm, drums, bongos, voices, & percussion

Ambient - A style of gentle, largely electronic instrumental music with no persistent beat, used to create or enhance a mood or atmosphere

Avante-garde - Music that is experimental in nature, can vary in sub-genres such as ambient, electronic, or piano. Objectively Weird!

Blues - Blues originated in the Deep South of the US around the 1860s by African-Americans. Consistent background patterns with a solo (usually guitar) on top

Chinese - Music that comes from the China It covers a highly diverse range of music from the traditional to the modern

Country - A form of pop music originating in the rural southern US It is traditionally a mixture of guitar ballads & dance tunes

Electronic - Also known as dance music, club music, or simply dance, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves, & festivals

Folk - Folk music includes traditional folk music & the genre that evolved from it during the 20th-century folk revival, with a focus on storytelling & use of acoustic guitars

Funk - Funk music is dance music that mixes rhythm & blues music with soul music. Used a lot in action comedies

Hip Hop - Hip-Hop music is a genre of pop music developed in the US by inner-city African Americans & Latino Americansa. Also includes rap & trap styles

Jazz - Jazz originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the early 20th centuries. Heavy use of piano, saxophone, guitar, upright bass & drums

Kids - Children's music or kids' music is music composed & performed for children

Latin - Music that comes from Spanish & Portuguese-speaking areas of the world Various styles of music from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, & the US

Metal - A loud, aggressive style of rock music Heavy metal songs are loud & powerful-sounding, & have strong rhythms that are repeated

*Filmmaker retains 100% exclusive rights to the music.

*Composer doesn’t “lose” the rights entirely, he or she exclusively licenses the music to the filmmaker for use in ads, trailers, media distribution and is entitled to half of the royalties.

Performance Royalties: The filmmaker or company receives 100% of the publishing share and composer recieves 100% of the writers shares.

Please note that each party must be registered with their Performance Rights Organization (PRO) by the first rough draft deadline. Cue sheets must also be submitted with the final deliverables - otherwise Compozly will act as any party or parties that aren’t registered with a PRO

Information Regarding Royalties if ‘No’ (Work For Hire Deal)

*Composer retains 100% exclusive rights to the music

*Composer is allowed to sell or distribute the music used in the project however they want. This is usually for smaller projects with no or little chance at back-end royalties

*No royalties or back-end income for either composer or filmmaker
